Music

There is a longstanding tradition of music-making at Camberwell Grammar School and it plays an integral part in our school life. We encourage all students to learn a musical instrument, and currently close to 500 students do so, assisted by 45 specialist members of the Music Staff.

Performance opportunities are available to all boys, as well as those who learn out of school, in the two symphony orchestras, three string orchestras, two concert bands, two stage bands, various chamber ensembles, and the three main school choirs, which alone has 300 boys.

Major school concerts, student recitals and church services are a feature of the music calendar. Some of which are held in the auditorium of our 1,000-seat Performing Arts Centre, capable of accommodating a full symphony orchestra.

Our exciting Music curriculum stretches right across the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools, comprising Composition, Dance and Chamber Music, Film Making, History, Instrumental and Ensemble Music, Music Technology, Music Theory, and Recording Techniques.

In the classroom, Music is a core subject up to Year 7 and an elective from Year 8, taught in our Mallinson Music School. It houses an auditorium, classrooms and rehearsal rooms, and is named after John Mallinson who was Head of Music at Camberwell Grammar School for more than 20 years.
